Tangled Threads

A bit of comment fic for [community profile] getyourwordsout

I'm working on a story out of an earlier challenge focused around Ellisande. Just made me think about what's going on in Darinae's side of things.

She didn't know what she was doing. )

Story a Day May, Day 6

I missed the last couple of days due to a Sci-Fi con I go to, but I always knew I was going to miss this weekend. Even though tonight was my critique group, I wanted to get things going again.

Story a Day May 2019, Day 2

Originally was working on a longer piece, but since it's still ongoing, I have another drabble based on an image I had for after the story plays out.

Runaway Tales: Anarchy and Rapture

One of my goals for 2010 is to get more writing done.

Over on LJ, there's a writing community, Runaway Tales, and there's more prompts over there than I know what to do with.

So my goal of 400,000 words for the year should be a bit easier, and I should understand my own universe better, right? :)

(Yeah, I know. But I can try.)

Script Frenzy 2009

[personal profile] caitlin and my Script Frenzy crossed the finish line at 105 pages, and I'm trying to put together the parts I wrote for validation at NaNoWriYe.

It was an interesting experience, but it's not one I think I'll be repeating.

There was a time when I was actually aware of how to write a screenplay. I was thirteen, and a single one-act play took over my life for the better part of a year. I did actually enter a contest, and I did actually do well. I got to the national semifinals, and if I had won, would have gotten a scholarship to Marymount Manhattan. Considering where my interests ended up laying in later years, I think I'm glad I did not get it, but at the time, it was a crushing blow to have lost that competition after getting so far. It was a good experience, but in retrospect, I'm not sure it really prepared me to do the full ScriptFrenzy experience the way I thought it would when I started the project.

I will admit, when [personal profile] caitlin suggested it, I was less than thrilled. However, once I had time to think about it (and since I was unemployed during this period, I had a little too much time on my hands) I decided I wanted us to do it. I threw in full-tilt, spent the next little while tossing ideas back and forth, trying to decide what to do... and I suggested the universe she wrote her last NaNoWriMo in.

It was, and remains, a good universe to do screenplays in. And it looked a simple enough task.

The problem was that there didn't seem to be enough time during the month to get everything done, and I had time more than [personal profile] caitlin did. There were many parts that were shiny and pretty and popped in my head separate from the parts of the novel she had created originally. It is a new universe, and there's a lot going on, so there was plenty of room to grow. However, it seemed that I was falling further and further behind many days, and only caught up due to a couple of 10+ page writing sessions near the end of the month.

I was, and continue to, feel the world. However, as time went on I was not feeling the format. I could see things in my head, but there were many aspects that I would have otherwise written had I not been trying for the screenplay.

There was at least one aspect of ScriptFrenzy that I enjoyed. The chance to do collaborative fiction with my primary collaborator. And I'm still wishing for NaNo to have that particular aspect to it. We have discussed potentially trying to find a way to get that to work, and we probably will. As it is, she's still nice enough to allow me to play around in the universe even now that Script Frenzy is over.

In short: it was nice, but can I have my prose (purple or otherwise) back now?

An odd bit of wistfulness...

There was a community on LJ that I adored, perhaps more than the one it spun off of.

I say was because it just sort of ... died, back in 2006. I don't even remember how or why. It was an original fiction community that used music to inspire short pieces. At least, they were usually short pieces. And considering how much a snippet of music can reach out and inspire me, and get me off and running, it was the right kind of impetus.

I think I would try to revive it there, or recreate it here, but today is a rare break. I'm running around crazy enough, between rl activities and work, that I don't have the time for it. And communities tend to need a bit of an eye being kept for things. And I would need to come up with the challenges, at least at first, and I know that many people aren't grabbed by the same sort of things I am, music-wise.

*sighs*

And this is the sort of thing that grabs me when I'm going back and tagging old entries.

Finds and Favourite Yarn Shops...

(I need a yarn/crafty/crochet/knitting icon. Ah, well. I'll figure that out later.)

From the moment I first saw it, I wanted to make the Hot Cross Slouch Beret. It would challenge me to learn new stitches and it's the perfect type of hat for the style of hair that I have. Especially now, with my decision to cut my hair so that it's up around my shoulders. I can just tuck my hair up under the hat and go.

The only problem was that I dithered too long and the magazine went off the market.

So almost every yarn shop I head into, if I can find back copies of Interweave Crochet, I look through them for the Winter 2007 copy. Today, [personal profile] caitlin and I actually headed into Lakeside Fibers during one of our infrequent trips into Madison.

(I. Love. This. Town. Like more than I can put into words. There is a reason why much of my fiction of late has been set here.)

There, next to where they keep the shelf of crochet books (including some that I have grown fond of), there were stacks of back issues of various crafting magazines. Including IC. At first, I flipped through them, and thought that it wasn't among them.

However, when I looked up the pattern on Ravelry, I realized that one of the covers looked familiar, so I looked again. Indeed, there it was. There were three copies. Now there are two, because I took one away with me.

And to think, the people at Loopy Yarns in Chicago didn't have it and suggested I might only be able to find a copy on eBay.

No, no eBay, and I was able to support an independent yarn store in the process.

Even though their hook selection seemed somewhat sad - I would love to see Addi hooks there at some point - I still think I should nominate this for the Crochet Friendly LYS list on the CLF.

Granted, I don't think I've been dissatisfied with any of the yarn stores here in the Madison area, and it's becoming something of a tradition to stop off at the Sow's Ear on our way out of town, but still.

Once I actually get the project stared, there will probably be updates, and occasional argh sounds of frustration as I try to get the new stitches down pat.
